Woodbury University Program to Showcase Gil Garcetti Photos of New Disney Concert Hall

(Burbank, CA August 27, 2003) Fine art photographer and former Los Angeles district attorney Gil Garcetti will offer an insider's view of the new Walt Disney Concert Hall during a Saturday, September 13 event at Woodbury University. Garcetti also will be honored with the Julius Shulman Communication Award, presented annually by Woodbury in honor of the famed architectural photographer and friend of the university.

Garcetti's images capture some of the 14,000 pieces of iron necessary to support the stainless steel skin of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by architect Frank Gehry. A longtime photographer, Garcetti was driving by the downtown concert hall during construction when he saw a man crawling on his hands and knees on an arched beam more than 100 feet high. Garcetti became fascinated by the geometry of the architecture and the daredevil ironworkers, returning to the site for months afterward to document the construction and eventually publishing the photos in the book "Iron: Erecting the Walt Disney Concert Hall." A second Garcetti book on the construction will be published to coincide with the October grand opening of the hall.

Garcetti will sign copies of his current book during a cocktail and buffet reception at 6 p.m. on September 13, with a slide show and lecture beginning at 7 p.m. Cost is $50 per person for the event at Woodbury University, 7500 Glenoaks Boulevard, Burbank. Proceeds benefit Woodbury University's Library Associates, a volunteer organization dedicated to improving library services. For tickets, please call 818.767.0888, ext. 230.
