Psychology

Douglas J. Cremer, Ph.D., Chair of Natural and Social Sciences

The Psychology major focuses on aspects of human behavior that students will need in tomorrow's workplace. The major concentrates on the behavior of human beings both as individuals and as members of communities. It investigates the nature of leadership and group dynamics, social influence and persuasion, the psychology of gender and human motivation, cognition and personality. Through course work and internships, students learn to function in diverse settings, work effectively with persons from various backgrounds, form and lead cohesive, productive teams or turn dysfunctional work environments into productive environments. Students confront issues of competition, cooperation and conformity within organizations, explore the function of memory and language among individuals and learn how to design and implement research models appropriate for corporations and other human organizations. This is the practical bachelor's degree in psychology that can be put to use immediately upon graduation. The major also prepares students for graduate school should they decide to continue their education.

The Psychology major provides the opportunity for completing one or two minors. The minor helps focus the skills developed in the major. Analytical thinking, strategic problem solving, effective writing, and persuasive communication are applied to the areas within the chosen major. A minor in business is recommended, but students are encouraged to discuss with their advisors other options that may better meet their individual career or graduate school goals.

An internship completes the curriculum, providing the student with the opportunity to put into practice the skills and theory learned over the past four years.
