Communication

Elisabeth Sandberg, Ph.D., Chair of Humanities

Communication is a generalist, interdisciplinary major with a strong foundation in the liberal arts that focuses on methods of communication as they relate to public and media relations, law, politics, teaching, marketing, advertising, education/consulting services, workplace training, media relations, public speaking, social services and business administration. The major blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience culminating in a four-year bachelor of science degree. The curriculum emphasizes a professional approach to the study of communication by integrating courses in analysis and persuasion, writing, design, principles of marketing, business practices and cultural patterns. Students gain practical experience through a supervised internship at a professional site.

Embedded in the major is a fifteen-unit minor. Although students may choose from any of the currently offered minors, they are recommended to minor in either marketing or graphic design. A graphic minor develops students' ability to evaluate communication problems, produce creative analyses and create or direct visual solutions. A marketing minor introduces students to all activities required to direct the flow of products, services and commercially-related ideas from producers to consumers. The program develops analytical, communication, and presentation skills that prepare graduates to enter diverse professional careers.
